The last film in the Divergent series won't open in cinemas, apparently.

Instead, it's being claimed The Divergent Series: Ascendant will go straight to TV.

There are already three films - Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant which are produced by Lionsgate.

The company has yet to comment and it's not yet clear whether falling box office returns are behind the possible switch. But there is already talk of a spin-off series for the small screen.

The Divergent films are based on a book series of the same name by Veronica Roth, that tells the story of teenagers caught in a battle in post-apocalyptic Chicago.

Variety says the idea is for the last film to "segue into a standalone television series set in the same post-apocalyptic world", external.

The first film was released in 2014, and made over $288m (£219m) worldwide.

The second film, Insurgent, did even better, with box office revenues of $297m (£224).

But the third film, Allegiant, didn't do so well, making $176m (£133) and it received a few negative reviews.

Variety also says that the series' stars, Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Theo James, might not be returning for the TV movie.

Fans are not happy to hear about this and they've been tweeting the hashtag #MakeAscendantAMovie to make their feelings known.
