MNEK: The main focus is my album and putting out more music
- Published
You'll probably know a lot of the songs MNEK's worked on.
He's produced tracks for the likes of Little Mix and Kylie and has written songs for acts including Beyonce, Madonna and Rudimental.
But now the 21-year-old, whose real name is Uzoechi Emenike, is ready to establish himself as an artist.
"I love writing and producing but I don't think a lot of people know my artist stuff," he told Newsbeat at this year's Boardmasters festival.
"I want to get that in the forefront. The main focus is the album now and putting out more music."
But with a handful of UK top 20 singles to his name, it's easy to see why MNEK's struggling to find the time to work on his solo material.
He explained how he's planning on asking his label for more time to finish his debut album.
"I've got shows, things I've started for other people that I need to finish. So I'm going to ask to extend it because nobody's rushing for an album from me.
"There's always so much stuff to do. I work best when my diary just says 'MNEK, MNEK, MNEK.'
"Either way I'm confident the album will sound the best it will sound because it won't come out otherwise. It's going to sound sick."

Recent tracks like Never Forget You, a duet with Zara Larson, and At Night (I Think About You) are the latest glimpses into what his solo album could sound like.
The singer explained how Never Forget You is one of the only times he's held on to a song which was originally intended for someone else.
"Never Forget You was going to be Zara's song by herself.
"But I was like, 'Everyone's giving me a hard time about writing better tunes than my own and I do like this song so I should just sing it.'
"I sang a solo version and our labels went back and forth and we ended up doing a duet and I love the duet and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
"I'm happy I did that one - it's a good tune and I love Zara."

Despite the album being "close", it's unlikely we'll get any previews.
"I understand, as an artist as well as a producer, the need for there to be mystery and surprise.
"I don't like it if someone's on Twitter saying, 'Oh I'm in the studio with this person.'
"I keep quiet and let the music do the talking.
"But I've got something to say. I'm excited for people to hear more tunes."
