Rapper Bobby Shmurda gets seven years on weapons and conspiracy charges

Rapper Bobby Shmurda has been given seven years in prison in New York on weapons and conspiracy charges.
The 22-year-old, whose real name is Ackquille Pollard, was handed the sentence after trying to turn down a court deal to plead guilty.
"I was forced to take this sentence," Bobby Shmurda told the judge, according to the New York Daily News, external.
Judge Abraham Clott confirmed the prison term but ruled there was no need for more time to review the case.
Bobby Shmurda argued with his lawyer in court after he tried to reject the deal, called a plea bargain in America, at the last-minute.
He told Alex Spiro: "I want to drop my plea and fire you... Why are you telling me to waive my rights? I am not waiving my rights."
The rapper accepted a deal to plead guilty to two charges last month in return for the seven-year sentence, which includes time already served.
Plea bargains are common in the US court system.
Bobby Shmurda's career took off in the months before his arrest thanks to his song Hot Boy, which references street life and guns.
The track climbed to number six on the US singles chart.
It went viral thanks to the accompanying Shmoney Dance, where people move their elbows in and out.
Stars including Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber showed off their own Shmoney moves.
Bobby Shmurda was signed to Epic Records and performed on the late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live days before his arrest.
Prosecutors said that Shmurda was part of a gang involved in shootings against rivals in Brooklyn.
Police reported that they'd seized 21 guns from Shmurda and seven associates but argued that his was a prop.
Bobby Shmurda told Complex magazine, external last month that his lawyer warned him that he would struggle to make his case in court.
"Who are they going to believe, the word of this black kid talking about shooting stuff up or the word of white officers?" he said.
