Shazam has revealed the tracks people searched for most on its app in 2016 and Sia tops the list.

For those who don't know, Shazam uses your phone's microphone to listen to your surroundings and help you identify a song.

Sia's Cheap Thrills is the year's most Shazamed track, while Mike Posner, Twenty One Pilots and Kungs vs Cookin' On 3 Burners also make the top five.

The top 10

Since it was launched, Shazam's been downloaded more than one billion times, and gets used around 20 million times a day.

Here are the most Shazamed tracks of the year:

  • Sia - Cheap Thrills

  • Kungs vs Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl

  • Alan Walker - Faded

  • Mike Posner - I Took A Pill In Ibiza (Seeb Remix)

  • Twenty One Pilots - Stressed Out

  • Lukas Graham - 7 Years

  • The Chainsmokers Feat. Daya - Don't Let Me Down

  • Imany - Don't Be So Shy (Filatov & Karas Remix)

  • DNCE - Cake By The Ocean

  • Justin Bieber - Love Yourself

Remember, though, that this isn't necessarily a list of the 2016's most popular tracks.

Instead, these are the tracks that people most wanted to find out the name of - which could be a good thing or a bad thing.

The app also broke things down by genre, with One Dance by Drake topping the hip-hop list.

Coldplay's Hymn For The Weekend was named the most Shazamed rock track - and Starboy, a collaboration between The Weeknd and Daft Punk, came out on top in R&B.

Ones to watch

Shazam has also used its data to come up with a list of artists to watch in 2017.

"When someone Shazams, it's a strong signal of interest in a song," says Rich Riley, the company's CEO.

"With hundreds of millions of users Shazaming over 20 million times per day, we have uniquely powerful insights into the songs that people are excited about and it's very predictive of future success."

The list includes Brighton-based singer Rag'n'Bone Man, who's already had a UK top 10 hit with Human.

Also mentioned is Anne-Marie, who features alongside Sean Paul on Clean Bandit's number one hit Rockabye.

Her track Alarm has had more than a million Shazams.
