A move by Donald Trump to stop some Muslims entering the US has been criticised by stars at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Emma Stone and Denzel Washington were among the actors calling for action.

The new president's suspended immigration from seven mainly Muslim countries for 90 days and halted the US refugee programme.

He denies it's a "Muslim ban" but says the US needs "extreme vetting" to prevent terror.

Accepting her award for best actress for La La Land, Emma Stone called the situation "inexcusable and scary".

"We're in a really tricky time in the world and our country," she said.

She claimed action was needed but said she was grateful to be part of a group of people "that cares".

Best actor Denzel Washington also argued Americans need to unite.

"We need to put our elected officials' feet to the fire and demand that they work together or they won't get back in office," he said.

Criticising the new US president has become a regular theme at Hollywood ceremonies.

Speaking backstage, John Legend also criticised Trump's move. "Everything our government does is being done in our name," he said.

"Our country should be open and inclusive, particularly for refugees. They are fleeing terrorism, they are fleeing war, they are fleeing genocide."

Meanwhile, Simon Helberg from the Big Bang Theory arrived at the ceremony with a sign saying "refugees welcome".

His wife had "let them in" written on her chest.

David Harbour, who plays Chief Hopper in Stranger Things got a standing ovation for his speech.

"We will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no hope," he said accepting the show's TV drama award.

"We will get past the lies. We will hunt monsters."

Dev Patel called it "horrible", "divisive" and "utterly devastating".

The best supporting actor nominee said he worries for children who arrive in the US "with hope in their hearts".

While Rogue One star Riz Ahmed also claimed he knew people hit by the travel ban.

It affects nationals from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

"If people care about the future of this country and the world ... it's time to make your voices heard," he said.

But at least one person had something to thank President Trump for... Shameless star William H. Macy who won best comedy series actor.

"I would like to go against the strain this evening and thank President Trump for making Frank Gallagher seem so normal," he said.
