The 12-year-old son of Metallica's bassist is going on tour with metal band Korn.

The group said that Tye Trujillo, a bassist like his father Robert Trujillo, will play with the band on a number of dates in South America.

Tye will fill in for Korn's 47-year-old regular bassist Reginald Arvizu.

Korn said Fieldy, as he's known in the band, couldn't travel due to "unforeseen circumstances" but will return for their US shows next month.

"We are bummed Fieldy can't join us on this run but excited to do a few gigs with a young player like Tye," Korn said in a Facebook post, external.

Writing on the thread below the message, many fans in South America are unhappy with the decision and say they'd rather have an adult professional fill in.

Others think Tye Trujillo will be a more than adequate replacement.

Tye is used to being on stage and has been playing the bass since the age of eight in The Helmets, a children's metal band based in northern California.

Robert Trujillo joined his son as a guest when The Helmets played the BottleRock Festival in California's wine-growing region of Napa County last year.

They've also performed at Lollapalooza Chile and Lollapalooza's Kidsapalooza stage in Chicago in 2015.

Korn were at the forefront of the nu metal movement in the 1990s and incorporate hip-hop into their music.

The group start their seven-date Latin America tour on 17 April in Bogota, Colombia, and will play three dates in Brazil as well as one show each in Buenos Aires, Santiago and Lima.

Reginald Arvizu will re-join Korn for their performance at Carolina Rebellion on 6 May.

The band are also due to appear at this year's Reading and Leeds Festival in August.

He took over from the band's former bassist, Jason Newsted, who left in 2001.
