Miley Cyrus has hit back at people who had a go at her for criticising the current state of hip-hop.

In a Billboard article, external, she said that she liked Kendrick Lamar's single Humble because it wasn't derogatory towards women, unlike lyrics in some other new rap music she'd heard.

"I can't listen to that," she said.

"That's what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much 'Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl...' - I am so not that."

Following the publication of the article, she was accused of turning her back on a genre she'd used to her benefit on her last album, Bangerz.

The 2013 record was influenced by hip-hop, was executive-produced by Mike Will Made It and featured collaborations with Future, Ludacris, Nelly and French Montana as well as production help from the likes of Pharrell Williams and will.i.am.

But Miley, who's given her new music a more country feel, says her comments were taken out of context.

Miley posted a long message on Instagram., external

"When articles are read it isn't always considered that for hours I've spoken with a journalist about my life, where my heart is, my perspective at that time, and the next step in my career," she wrote.

"Unfortunately only a portion of that interview makes it to print, & A lot of the time publications like to focus on the most sensationalized part of the conversation.

"So, to be clear I respect ALL artists who speak their truth and appreciate ALL genres of music (country, pop, alternative .... but in this particular interview I was asked about rap).

"I have always and will continue to love and celebrate hip hop as I've collaborated with some of the very best."

The 24-year-old also says she didn't mean that she didn't like hip-hop at all now but says she's enjoying more "uplifting, conscious rap".

"As I get older I understand the effect music has on the world & Seeing where we are today I feel the younger generation needs to hear positive powerful lyrics."
