US President Barack Obama has arrived with his family in Northern Ireland to attend the annual summit of the G8 group of nations. He waved as he left Air Force One with his daughter Sasha at Belfast International Airport.
The president spoke to an audience at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, ahead of the G8 summit in County Fermanagh. He said the road to a lasting peace in Northern Ireland was "as urgent now as it has ever been".
The president was introduced to the audience by his wife, Michelle. She said she and her husband were "so proud" of Northern Ireland's young people.
Sixteen-year-old Hannah Nelson, of Methodist College, Belfast, addressed the audience before the Obamas spoke. She said: "Now is the time to start making permanent peace happen in Northern Ireland."
In the audience to hear Mr Obama were Northern Ireland Finance Minister Sammy Wilson and Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, seen here taking part in a Mexican wave before the president spoke.
President Obama's daughters Malia (left, with Mrs Obama) and Sasha (right, with her father) are expected to spend time in Dublin with their mother while the G8 summit is held over two days. Here they approach the Marine One helicopter.
Thousands of police officers are involved in security during the G8 event and Obama visit in Belfast, with disruptions expected to transport, roads and schools.
Mr Obama also visited Enniskillen Integrated Primary School, where he joined UK Prime Minister David Cameron and pupils in some art work. The two leaders talked about Syria and the rest of the G8 agenda as they travelled together to and from the school, Downing Street aides said.
Anti-hunger activists wore giant heads of the G8 leaders, including Mr Obama, to call for them to eliminate the causes of hunger. They sailed near the G8 media centre in Enniskillen.
Other leaders of G8 countries also arrived on Monday morning - among them Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta.
