The fifth annual Armed Forces Day has been held in recognition of the contribution made by service personnel past and present. Parades were held, including in Portsmouth where Royal Navy staff took part.

Also in Portsmouth, Harold Turtle, 91, from the Isle of Wight, proudly wore his Arctic Star medal after receiving it for the second time during event.

Events had started off in Nottingham. The acrobatic display team, the Red Arrows, flew above the city.

A parade was also held in the city, with hundreds taking part.

Crowds lined the streets from Nottingham Castle to the Old Market Square to watch the parade.

The day attracted people of many ages. More than 340 civic and community events have been registered with the official Armed Forces Day organisers.

Prime Minister David Cameron was in Afghanistan for the day. "Let us show everyone in our Armed Forces just how proud we are of everything that they do," he said.

And at the Wimbledon tennis championship, members of the Armed Forces were applauded when they were introduced in the royal box on Saturday.
