Tessa Jowell and Lord Frederick Windsor were mentioned in email evidence

Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and the prime minister's former communications chief Andy Coulson are among eight people on trial in connection with the phone-hacking affair.

During the prosecution's opening statement at the Old Bailey, barristers referred to three emails disclosed by News International which caused police to launch their investigation into phone hacking in 2011.

These emails, from private investigator Glenn Mulcaire to then News of the World head of news Ian Edmondson, have now been released.

The court was told they concerned the hacking of phones linked to MP Tessa Jowell and her husband David Mills, Lord Frederick Windsor - the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent - and an adviser to former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Prescott.

Ian Edmondson, Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, along with former News of the World managing editor Stuart Kuttner, deny conspiracy to hack phones.

Email One subject: MP Tessa Jowell

The court was told that the first email message between Mulcaire and Mr Edmondson, on 20 April 2006, referred to MP Tessa Jowell and her husband David Mills, at a time when he had been accused of involvement in bribery linked to former Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi.

Email Two subject: Lord Frederick Windsor

Another message referred to Lord Frederick Windsor, the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, and contained a reference to "press star" and "pin", which prosecutors claim was Mulcaire telling Mr Edmondson how to hack a phone.

The third email referred to an adviser to former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Prescott. The minister was then at the centre of a publicity storm over an alleged affair.
