Terror suspect Haroon Aswat's extradition approved

A terror suspect accused of conspiring with radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri can be extradited to the US, the High Court has ruled.

The US says Haroon Aswat, from Batley, West Yorkshire, conspired with Abu Hamza to establish a terrorist training camp in the state of Oregon.

His extradition was blocked by the European judges last year because of fears about his mental health.

Mr Aswat, who is thought to be in his 30s, denies involvement in terrorism.

He was arrested by police in 2005, following a request from US authorities, and was transferred from prison to Broadmoor psychiatric hospital in 2008, because he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

Mr Aswat's lawyers argued that being held in an American "supermax" prison could cause his mental health to deteriorate.

The European Court of Human Rights blocked the extradition last year but Home Secretary Theresa May said she would continue to seek his removal to the US.

In April, the High Court asked for assurances that, if sent to the US, Mr Aswat would be held in a psychiatric referral centre and examined by doctors.

Abu Hamza was extradited from Britain to the US nearly two years ago and found guilty of terrorism charges in May. He has yet to be sentenced.
