Scale of British war effort in World War One

At the outbreak of World War One in 1914, no-one could have imagined the scale of the military operation and bloodshed to come.

In 1922, the War Office published the 900-page Statistics of the Military Effort of the British Empire during the Great War detailing the vast figures involved and how they changed between 1914 and 1918. The data covers all aspects of the conflict, from the arming, feeding and supplying of the military machine to the human cost of those serving a nation at war.
