Beet sugar campaign now under way across region

Dry weather helps sugar content and root yields to increase

Lorries will work flat out from this week to carry beet from farms to British Sugar factories to ensure processing benefits from dry weather.

Production has started at Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, Wissington and Cantley in Norfolk.

The campaign, a title dating from the early days of beet sugar production, lasts into the winter months.

"The early start means the beet crop will benefit from the improved weather conditions," British Sugar said.

Colm McKay, agriculture director said: "It should also allow time for growers to also benefit from improved sugar content levels during the early campaign weeks."
