Train operator retains c2c London to Essex franchise

A train operator has had its franchise for a London to Essex line extended by the government for a further two years.

The National Express Group said its control of the c2c service was due to expire in May 2011 but has been extended to 26 May 2013.

It operates between Fenchurch Street station in east London and Shoeburyness in Essex, and serves 26 stations in south Essex.

National Express said it will provide extra services for the 2012 Olympics.

Earlier this year, passengers were consulted on National Express's rail franchises in Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire ahead of a new round of franchise awards which are due to be renewed in 2011.
