Footballer Ashley Cole is not expected to be prosecuted after shooting a man in an apparent accident at Chelsea's training ground in Surrey.

Tom Cowan, 21, was hit by a pellet from an airgun brought into the training ground by Cole on 20 February.

It is anticipated no charges will be brought by Surrey Police who are investigating the incident.

The force said last week it had received no formal complaint. Chelsea vowed to take "appropriate action".

Mr Cowan, who is on a one-year work placement at Chelsea, was hit in the side by a lead pellet at the club's training ground in Cobham.

Chelsea's medical staff reportedly treated the bleeding wound and Mr Cowan did not require hospital treatment.
