Donington race track plans could create 1,500 jobs

Work at the circuit has included making sure it complies with safety standards

Plans to redevelop the largest racing circuit in the East Midlands could create up to 1,500 jobs.

The proposed development of the Donington Park infield would include a showcase for motor sport firms as well as more entertainment facilities.

A Donington Park Racing spokesman said the work would develop the track "as an enterprise area for the motor industry."

The track hosts the World Superbike Championship on 25 March.

Failed bid

Donington Park Racing chairman Kevin Wheatcroft said they had already invested several million pounds in reopening the circuit and making sure it complied with safety standards.

"Drawings have already been produced for a proposed new development anchored around Norton Motorcycles, initially to allow for their ongoing expansion," Mr Wheatcroft said.

He said the expansion at the Leicestershire track would create several hundred jobs during the construction phase and up to 1,500 permanent jobs.

The venue lost a deal to host the F1 British Grand Prix in 2009 after the previous owner failed to raise the £120m needed to upgrade the track.
