King George VI saloon on display at Severn Valley Railway

An armour-plated railway carriage in which King George VI toured the country has gone on display in Shropshire.

The Severn Valley Railway is displaying the Royal saloon in which the King travelled during World War II.

A railway spokesman said the King held talks with many heads of state, such as French President Charles De Gaulle, on the train.

Tours are taking place at the Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley until 26 April.

The carriage was gifted to the Severn Valley Railway in 2007 by the National Railway Museum. It was previously on display at Glasgow Transport Museum.

The Severn Valley Railway runs steam services from Kidderminster in Worcestershire to Bridgnorth in Shropshire.
