Dr Daniel Ubani fined £6,275 over Cambridgeshire patient's death

The German medical authorities have fined a doctor who killed a patient in the UK with a massive drug overdose.

Dr Daniel Ubani was working for an out-of-hours medical service in 2008 when he gave 70-year-old David Gray a fatal injection in Cambridgeshire.

Dr Ubani could not be dealt with by English courts as he had been given a suspended sentence in Germany.

An administrative court has fined Ubani 7,000 Euros (£6,275) for breaking its professional code of conduct.

The fine was for violating the code in connection with the death of David Gray three years ago and mistreating two other patients during his first out of hours shift in the UK.

Dr Ubani was working for an out-of-hours medical service in 2008 when he injected David Gray with 10 times the recommended dosage of diamorphine during a visit to his home in Manea.

'Powerless'

The specialist in cosmetic medicine, who is based in Witten, Germany, had admitted confusing morphine with another drug.

Following Mr Gray's death, Dr Ubani was handed a nine-month suspended sentence by a German court after he admitted causing death by negligence.

The Doctors Chamber, the equivalent of the General Medical Council in the UK, wants Ubani struck off but they are powerless to force him to go.

The organisation's spokesman Markus Wenning told the BBC: "The main problem is that he is still allowed to practice.

"But this administrative court [which deals with medical concerns] does not have the authority to withdraw his licence.

"They can only judge his behaviour. He's been sentenced in a special court for doctors, not a normal court, because he violated the doctors' code of conduct."

He added: "We wanted him struck off. It is finished because we don't have any legal opportunities to do more. The local government could get rid of them but they won't. We are worried still for the safety of patients in Germany.

"We are frustrated by this case, we are keeping up the pressure for change at federal and state level, at this stage we can't do any more".

David Gray's sons Dr Stuart Gray, who lives in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, and his brother Rory, who lives in Germany, have been campaigning to get Ubani struck off in Germany.
