Luminar nightclubs to close including crush death venue

A nightclub company has announced the closure of 11 venues across England, including one in Northampton where a student died in a crush last month.

Luminar, which runs Liquid, Oceana and Lava Ignite clubs, went into administration last month.

Up to 300 staff at the venues are set to lose their jobs.

Wigan, Northampton, Brighton, Bury St Edmunds, Basingstoke, Hemel Hempstead, Swindon, Mansfield, Redditch, High Wycombe and Sunderland clubs will shut.

Administrator Ernst and Young said the clubs being closed had already been identified as "non-core".

Crush death

Luminar's remaining 65 clubs will continue to trade as normal as the administrator seeks a potential buyer.

Ernst and Young said it had received a large number of inquiries about the remaining clubs, which employ 2,500 people.

Luminar recorded losses of £198m in the year to the end of February.

Nabila Nanfuka, 22, from London, died in hospital following a crush at Lava Ignite in Northampton on 19 October.

The club had its licence suspended by Northampton Borough Council, pending a police investigation into the crush.

The administrators said the decision to close it was not related to the incident, but due to its poor trading performance.
