The leader of a Shropshire council has asked the Secretary of State for Transport for support over a campaign to improve motorway access.

Telford & Wrekin Council wants the link between the M54 and the northbound M6 and M6 Toll improved.

Council leader Kuldip Sahota has written to Justine Greening asking her to back the scheme.

Roads Minister Mike Penning previously said the government was reviewing the project.

If approved construction work could potentially begin after 2015.

Traffic from the M54, which goes through Telford in Shropshire, currently moves directly on to the M6 southbound in Staffordshire.

The authority said it believed the time was right for the link to be set up after plans were announced to build a £350m Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) facility at the i54 business park near the motorway close to Wolverhampton.

The link was originally proposed when the M6 Toll was built but was subsequently delayed.
