Medical director at Morecambe Bay hospitals trust stands down

There have been a number of baby deaths at the maternity unit at Furness General Hospital

The medical director at a troubled health trust covering south Cumbria and Lancashire is to stand down.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) has been criticised by health watchdogs.

It is also under the spotlight after a number of deaths inside the maternity unit at Furness General Hospital.

Peter Dyer, who has held the post for six years, will continue to be involved in a review of education, training and research at the trust.

The trust has faced critical reports by the Care Quality Commission and the independent regulator, Monitor.

Sir David Henshaw, chair of UHMBT, said: "I would like to thank Peter for his hard work, commitment and dedication.

"Peter has a passion for education and training, and will be of real benefit to this forthcoming review.

"We will be going out to advert for a new permanent medical director but, in the meantime, I am very pleased that Mr George Nasmyth, general and colorectal surgeon and associate medical director, has agreed to become the interim medical director.

"I am sure you will all join me in welcoming George to the post at this important time in our development."
