Ex-Chelsea footballer Jacob Mellis cautioned for common assault

A former Chelsea player, who parted company with the club after setting off a smoke grenade at the training ground, has received a caution for assault.

Jacob Mellis, 21, and a 19-year-old woman, were arrested when police were called to an address in Cobham, Surrey, at 03:30 BST on Sunday.

The pair were questioned by officers and released after both accepted cautions for common assault.

Mellis is a free agent after leaving the Blues by mutual consent last month.

He was released by the club after he admitted setting off the smoke grenade on 2 March.

Team-mate Billy Clifford, 19, admitted bringing in the grenade and was fined.

Mellis, a former England Under-16s, U-17s and U-19s international, is currently on trial at Queens Park Rangers.
