English mayoral elections and referendums

On 3 May 2012 ten English cities held referendums on whether to have a directly-elected mayor chosen by voters while Doncaster voted on whether to keep its directly-elected mayor.
Nottingham, Manchester, Coventry, Bradford, Wakefield, Sheffield, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Birmingham and Leeds have all rejected directly-elected mayors, while Bristol has voted for one. Doncaster voters chose to retain theirs. Full results listed below.
The wording of these referendums was: "How would you like ______ council to be run? "By a Leader who is an elected councillor chosen by the other elected councillors. This is how the council is run now <italic>or </italic>by a Mayor who is elected by voters."

The wording of this referendum was: "How would you like Doncaster Council to be run?
"By a mayor who is elected by voters. This is how the council is run now <italic>or </italic> by a leader who is an elected councillor chosen by a vote of the other elected councillors. This would be a change from how the council is run now.
