House prices in Whitby soar

House prices in Whitby have gone up by 151% over the last 10 years

Whitby in North Yorkshire has been named as the most expensive seaside town in which to buy a house in the north of England.

A survey of Land Registry data by Halifax found prices in Whitby averaged £211,484.

House prices in the town have increased by 151% over the last 10 years.

Cleethorpes in North East Lincolnshire was named as the third most expensive seaside town where houses averaged £119,460.

These figures showed prices had risen by 141%.

Withernsea in East Yorkshire was named as the second least expensive seaside town in England and Wales to buy a house, with prices averaging £92,356.

Halifax said seaside properties within Yorkshire and the Humber were cheaper than the average house price in those counties.

Martin Ellis, housing economist at Halifax, said: "Seaside living often comes with a price. The majority of seaside towns in Wales, East Anglia and the South West have an average house price that is higher than the surrounding area.

"But this is not always the case and good value properties can be found in many seaside towns in the South East and Yorkshire and the Humber in particular."
