Railway worker killed by train in Lincolnshire

A railway worker has died after being struck by a train while working on a track in Lincolnshire.

The man, thought to be aged 26 and from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, was struck at Sykes Lane, about half a mile from Saxilby station, at about 13:55 GMT.

British Transport Police said it involved the 11:19 GMT passenger train from Scunthorpe to Lincoln Central.

The force said the Rail Accident Investigation Branch was carrying out an inquiry.

A spokeswoman from Network Rail said the man was a contractor.

Train operator Northern Rail confirmed it was a train run by the company which had struck the man.

Bob Crow, general secretary for the RMT union, told the BBC: "A health and safety officer is actually at the site, getting investigation details of what has happened.

"We don't have the person's name at this time and we expect the family to be told before we make any comment."

Northern Rail said the line had since reopened between Lea Road at Gainsborough and Lincoln Central, after it was closed earlier.

The British Transport Police said the man's family had been informed.
