Gordon Banks said the stamp ranked highly among his achievements

England's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks says he feels "very, very proud" to feature on a set of stamps.

The Royal Mail stamps, which went on sale earlier, celebrate 150 years of the Football Association.

Banks is one of 11 football heroes from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to feature on them.

The former Leicester, Stoke and Chesterfield goalkeeper said when he thought of all the footballers who have ever played, it was "a real honour".

Asked where it ranks among his achievements, Banks, who won 73 caps for England, said: "Obviously anything of that nature that is big.... it's very, very high in that respect.

"I got the OBE from the Queen and.... Footballer of the Year and one or two more things like that, but obviously this comes high with those."

Alongside Banks on the new stamp collection are George Best, Kevin Keegan, Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson, John Barnes, John Charles, Jimmy Greaves, Denis Law, Dave Mackay and Bobby Moore.

The portraits were illustrated by artist Andrew Kinsman.

He then created a composite artwork so that when the 11 stamps are placed together, they form a traditional team shot.

The 11 players selected were chosen for their outstanding record on the pitch and representation of their home country.
