Detectives looking for missing teenager Georgia Williams say a search is taking place near Wrexham in north Wales.

The 17-year-old student, from Wellington, Shropshire, was last seen in the town on Sunday evening.

An area of land on the Nant-y-Garth pass is being searched by officers from North Wales Police.

A man, 22, from Wellington, who was arrested in Glasgow on Tuesday, is being questioned by police in Telford.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "These searches are part of our ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 17-year-old Georgia Williams from Wellington."

The force made an appeal on the BBC's Crimewatch programme on Thursday for sightings of a silver Toyota Hiace 300 GS van, registration CX06 ASV.

The van travelled from Wellington to Oswestry, Shropshire, before going to north Wales, Chester, Kendal in Cumbria and then on to Glasgow, where it was seized by officers.

Supt Nav Malik, from West Mercia Police said the force had received more than 100 messages about sightings of Georgia and the van.

He said: "I cannot go into detail at this time but the sighting of the van is of potential significance.

"We are following up on that today along with another three sightings of the van which were phoned in after Crimewatch."

"We know [the van] was heading towards the main arterial routes from the Wrexham area at about 5pm on Monday. We also know that at about 10.30pm the vehicle was at Deeside, Queensferry, Cheshire, heading north."

House searched

Detectives are also asking shops and businesses in the Wrexham and Deeside areas to check their CCTV footage from last Monday evening for any sign of the van.

On Thursday, forensic searches were carried out at a semi-detached house in Avondale Road, Wellington - where neighbours said a Jamie Reynolds lived with his parents.

There were also searches at Brown Moss nature reserve, near Whitchurch, Shropshire, although a police cordon in place there has since been lifted.

Officers searched the area after items of clothing were found, although this discovery has now been ruled out as having any connection with Georgia's disappearance.

On Thursday evening, magistrates in Telford granted police an extra 36 hours to hold the 22-year-old man being questioned on suspicion of murder.

He was arrested on Wednesday at a hotel in Glasgow on suspicion of kidnapping Georgia.

Police have until 06:30 BST on Saturday to charge or release him.

The West Mercia force said it was still looking for Georgia "at this moment in time" and 50 detectives were working on the investigation.

Police are still appealing for information from anyone who saw or was in contact with Georgia after she left her home on Sunday night.
