An SAS soldier has been found guilty of possessing a pistol and ammunition at a retrial by a military court in Wiltshire.

Sgt Danny Nightingale, of Crewe in Cheshire, had denied illegally possessing a Glock 9mm pistol and 338 rounds of ammunition found during a police search at an address in Hereford, near his SAS headquarters.

He was originally given a sentence of 18 months in military detention in November 2012 after admitting the charge.

However, his conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal in March 2013. Judges ruled he had been placed under "improper pressure" to plead guilty at the military trial.

The retrial before a court martial board in Bulford, Wiltshire, found him guilty on both counts on 10 July 2013.

Timeline

1995: Joins the 1st Battalion, the Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

2001: Transfers to the SAS.

2007: Nightingale finishes tour of duty in Iraq - he has always claimed he was given the pistol by nationals he had been working with.

October 2009: While taking part in a five-day 132-mile marathon in Brazil, to raise money for injured soldiers, Nightingale suffers a brain injury. The injury forms part of the defence case.

16 September 2011: A 9mm Glock pistol and ammunition is found during a search by West Mercia Police at an address where Nightingale stayed near the SAS headquarters in Hereford.

6 - 7 November 2012: Court martial is held at the Military Court Centre, Bulford, Wiltshire. Nightingale is given a sentence of 18 months of military detention after pleading guilty to the charge of possessing a pistol and ammunition.

20 November: Special debate held on the case in the House of Commons.

29 November: Nightingale is released after the Court of Appeal cut and suspended his sentence. Judges reduced it to a 12-month suspended sentence.

13 March 2013: His conviction is overturned by the Court of Appeal after judges rule he had been placed under "improper pressure" to plead guilty at the military trial.

2 April: Nightingale's lawyers challenge whether it is in the public interest to retry him.

1 May: A judge orders a retrial at a hearing at the Military Court Centre in Bulford, Wiltshire.

10 June: The Army personnel centre announces that Sgt Nightingale is to be medically discharged from the service. Lawyers say his last week with the Army will be in February 2014.

2 July: Retrial begins at the Military Court Centre, Bulford, Wiltshire.

10 July: Nightingale is convicted by a court martial board of possessing a Glock 9mm pistol and 338 rounds of ammunition, which were found in his bedroom in September 2011.

25 July: Nightingale is given two years' detention suspended for 12 months
