Redhill £10m radiotherapy unit to open next spring

A new £10m radiotherapy unit is on course to open next spring in Redhill ending some patients' 46-mile round trips for treatment in Guildford.

Building work on the unit at East Surrey Hospital is complete and equipment will be moved in over the next months before it opens in 2014.

The project is a joint scheme between two hospital trusts in Surrey.

Between them, the trusts serve more than 1.5m people across Surrey, Sussex, and Hampshire.

'Closer to home'

Michael Wilson, chief executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS, which runs the hospital in Redhill, said: "Our patients needing radiotherapy currently have a 46-mile round trip to Guildford for treatment.

"The new unit means they will now be able to have their treatment much closer to home and in a brand new modern facility."

Nick Moberly, chief executive of Royal Surrey County Hospital, said the trusts had made progress over the 18 months and he was looking forward to celebrating the official opening next spring.

The two trusts agreed on the plans in July last year, and construction work began on the site in March.
