Plans to carry carbon dioxide across Yorkshire to the North Sea in a 46-mile (75km) pipeline have gone out to a public consultation.

National Grid's plan would see the gas transported underground in liquid form from major power stations in South and North Yorkshire to the east coast.

The gas will then be stored in porous rock beneath the seabed.

The latest proposals will go on show in exhibitions at nine locations along the preferred route of the pipeline.

The project, known as carbon capture, transportation and storage, external (CCS) has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel power stations by up to 90%, according to National Grid.

The underground pipeline would have the capacity to transport up to 17 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

It would run from Stainforth in South Yorkshire to Barmston in East Yorkshire.

It would transport liquid carbon dioxide from both the proposed Don Valley Power Project at Hatfield, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, and the White Rose CCS project at Drax power station, near Selby in North Yorkshire.

A series of public exhibitions is due to be held at venues along the draft preferred pipeline route until 2 October.

The proposals for the pipeline are expected to be finalised and an application for planning consent submitted to the Planning Inspectorate by the end of March 2014.

The public exhibitions will be held at:

  • Carlton Village Hall on 23 September between 15:00 and 19:00 BST

  • Barlow Village Hall on 24 September between 15:00 and 19:00 BST
