A spokesman said the during the closure it would also carry out work to reduce the impact of flooding on the route.

The line is expected to be back in service by Monday 9 February.

Until then passengers using First Great Western and CrossCountry services are being warned of delays to services and increased journey times, external.

Other services would run to an amended timetable and passengers should check with National Rail Enquiries before travelling.

Some trains between London Paddington and Devon and Cornwall will be diverted and will not call at Taunton or Tiverton Parkway.

Replacement buses will operate between Taunton, Tiverton Parkway and/or Exeter St Davids.
