About 2,400 young people started the Ten Tors Challenge across Dartmoor in Devon.

The Ten Tors entrants, aged between 14 and 19, will trek for 35, 45 or 55 miles and camp on the moor on Saturday night.

The Ten Tors Challenge tests schoolchildren on navigational and team-working skills.

Most of the entrants are from Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Trekkers, who have been training for months, carry all their food, water, bedding, tents and other essentials.

Several hundred more youngsters with disabilities or special needs are taking part in the sister-event, the Jubilee Challenge.
