Brierley Hill war memorial given Grade II listed status

A war memorial described by English Heritage as an "eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world wars" has been given Grade II listed status.

The monument stands at the top of Church Hill in Brierley Hill, Dudley.

It is topped by a statue based on a photograph of Stanley Harley, the first Brierley Hill man to be awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) in World War One.

The memorial, unveiled in 1921, was made by Browns of Kidderminster.

Councillor Hilary Bills, from Dudley Council, said: "I am delighted the memorial has been granted listed status by English Heritage.

"It is a striking feature on the Brierley Hill landscape and a lasting tribute to those who have given their lives in conflicts."

Pte Harley was awarded the DCM in 1917 while serving with the Worcestershire Regiment.
