Brighton Pier death swimmer named by police

A swimmer who died after getting into difficulties in the sea near Brighton Pier has been named as Thabo Gwemende, 22, from Surrey.

Mr Gwemende, from Talfourd Way, Redhill, was pronounced dead at the scene after being pulled from the water by coastguards.

He disappeared after swimming in rough seas east of the pier just after 07:00 BST on Saturday.

Search teams found him approximately 1km (0.6 miles) from the pier.

Efforts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful. Sussex Police said the coroner had been informed.
