Newspapers in Luton, Northampton and Milton Keynes to close

Three weekly newspapers are to be closed in Luton, Milton Keynes and Northampton, owner Trinity Mirror has confirmed.

The company has confirmed 11 jobs across the titles are at risk of redundancy, subject to consultation.

The titles to fold are Luton and Dunstable on Sunday, One MK and the Northampton Herald and Post.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "We are not exiting these markets but will retain a presence in a different way."

She said the changes would include "increasing the focus on Bedfordshire on Sunday which remains as both a print title and website".

"We believe there is a better way for us to provide content and commercial solutions for the local communities, for example through a schedule of niche products and awards and events," the spokeswoman said.

The National Union of Journalists has been approached for a comment on the closures but is yet to respond.
