A ceremony is taking place in Luton to mark the start of work to build a £26m aquatic centre for the town.
Facilities at the site, due to open to the public by July 2012, will include a 50m pool, a world-class diving pool and seating for 400 spectators.
There will also be a community pool, gym, sports hall and dance studio.
Luton Borough Council, Wates Construction and Luton Learning and Community Partnership are hosting the ceremony at Stopsley Common.
Councillor Hazel Simmons said: "It's taken many years for us to get to this stage and we have had to overcome many challenges but we are delighted that finally the town will get what it deserves.
"The centre will also give us the ability to support potential future sports champions."
