Spending Review: Hertfordshire council jobs to go

The county council faces a 28% cut to its budget over four years

More than 1,000 jobs will be lost over the next four years at Hertfordshire County Council.

The authority said it was facing a 28% cut to its grant from central government.

Council leader Robert Gordon said the Local Government Association estimated most councils would lose 10% of their workforce.

He said this meant between 1,000 and 1,100 posts would have to go at the county council.

Mr Gordon said: "We have already identified £110m in savings that will not compromise frontline services.

"Given the scale of the challenge, it is likely that some of this will have to be funded by service reductions and or increased charges for some services."

The council said it hoped to avoid compulsory redundancies by transferring staff to outside contractors, early retirement and asking for volunteers willing to take redundancy.
