Campaign to deter kerb crawlers in Luton

A campaign has begun in an attempt to deter kerb crawlers from the streets of a Bedfordshire town.

Passers-by will now see a large banner in Dudley Street, Luton, and metal signs warning kerb crawlers that the activity is criminal.

Local shops will also display the anti-kerb crawling message.

The publicity campaign will last about eight to 10 weeks and is being used alongside enforcement work against kerb crawlers.

There will be extra police patrols in the area.

Insp Vicky Miller said: "This is an age-old problem.

"With that comes associated criminality and frequent and persistent nuisance to the residents of the area.

"Residents should not have to put up with the sex trade on their doorstep so in order to deter the kerb crawlers and remind them we are patrolling the area we have put up the signs, which we are able to move about if necessary."
