A horse that escaped from an overturned horsebox on the M40 caused lengthy delays while it was captured.

Firefighters caught the animal between junction two for Gerrards Cross and junction three for Beaconsfield on Sunday afternoon.

A second horse that was injured inside the horsebox was also rescued.

The motorway was closed in both directions for about two hours from 15:00 BST.

Thames Valley Police said both horses had to be sedated in order to keep them calm while they were rescued, but they were "safe and well".
