The chairman of Milton Keynes Dons football club has said he was "overwhelmed" to be granted the freedom of the borough.

Pete Winkelman will be just the fourth person to be awarded the honour, which will be presented to him in November by Milton Keynes Council.

Council leader Pete Marland said it was "difficult to quantify" how much Mr Winkelman had done for the town.

"I am completely overwhelmed - it's a massive honour," said Mr Winkelman.

Mr Winkelman, who said he was "proud to be from Milton Keynes", moved there in the early 1990s to open a music studio.

He then launched the controversial bid to bring Wimbledon FC to the town, which was re-named MK Dons in 2004.

He has also been responsible for building the club's 30,000-seat stadium, which will help host the Rugby World Cup in October.
