Stolen car driven on railway tracks at Cheshunt to escape police

A stolen vehicle was driven down railway tracks in front of stunned passengers to evade police in what a witness described as "like a scene from Grand Theft Auto".

The black Land Rover Discovery was then abandoned on the track near Cheshunt railway station, Hertfordshire, having earlier sped away from a police stop.

Two officers were injured in the incident, which saw one of them thrown from the car.

A hunt is under way for the driver.

It was abandoned on the railway line nearby, causing major disruption to rail services.

Hertfordshire Police said it was made aware at about 09:30 BST that the vehicle had travelled into the county from Essex.

The force said it was found in Cheshunt, where Essex officers attempted to speak to the driver.

An officer was thrown from the car as it sped off, damaging several vehicles.

The officers involved did not require hospital treatment and were being supported, it said.

British Transport Police (BTP) said its officers also responded to the incident.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said the car had been taken off the line and repair work to the track was due to take place.

Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Hertfordshire police.
