An area around a fire station was cordoned off after a suspected historical explosive device was taken into the building.

Hertfordshire Police said, external the item - a spent shell - was brought into Berkhamsted fire station by a person who found it while fishing.

A 50m (164ft) cordon was placed around the building in Castle Street, Berkhamsted at 14:50 GMT on Sunday.

A bomb disposal team was called and decided the shell posed no risk.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes, which had been evacuated as a precaution, and the cordon was lifted at 17:10, police said.

Berkhamsted Boys School opened its common room for residents to wait in while the cordon was in place.
