Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service stands down major incident

A large fire in the Walnut Tree area of Milton Keynes broke out at about midday

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has stood down a major incident after it tackled many blazes on the UK's hottest ever day.

It had made the call at about 19:45 BST on Tuesday "due to high demand across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes".

Incidents included a large-scale fire which affected a nursery in the Walnut Tree area of Milton Keynes.

In Wooburn Moor, near High Wycombe, 11 crews were sent to a commercial building fire in Whitehouse Lane.

Chief fire office Jason Thelwell said: "A big thank you to all those who worked over and above what was expected of them yesterday."

Fifteen crews from across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire were sent to a fence fire in the Walnut Tree area of Milton Keynes at about midday on Tuesday, which spread to neighbouring buildings.

One of the buildings was Kiddi Caru Day Nursery and Pre-school, but the owners said all children and staff were safely evacuated.

A single-storey building and three two-storey homes were "100% damaged by fire", with multiple vehicles also fire-damaged, with further properties damaged by smoke, the fire service said.

Some 39 properties were evacuated and one woman was treated by the ambulance service after breathing in smoke.

By 17:00, crews were damping down and making sure the area was safe.

Resident Kayti Byrne said she would not be allowed home for several days.

"Because of the water damage in the house we're not allowed back for the next week," she said.

"I'm shocked to be honest, but we're safe and [everything] materialistic doesn't matter."

Elsewhere, 11 crews were sent to a commercial building fire in Whitehouse Lane, Wooburn Moor at about 12:45 where a barn was destroyed by fire which spread to an another commercial building.

By 20:30, the incident was scaled down with six crews remaining to dampen down and make sure the area was safe.

One female casualty who breathed in smoke was treated by paramedics, the service said.
