A man has died after a serious crash on the M1 in Hertfordshire.
The road was shut in both directions between junction six for Bricket Wood and junction eight for Hemel Hempstead.
Hertfordshire police said a 58-year-old man, who was a pedestrian, died after a crash involving a van on the northbound carriageway.
Police said it was linking the crash to an earlier collision between two cars, where occupants of one vehicle left before police arrived.
Sgt Ian Manley from the Road Policing Unit said officers believe the man who died was in one of the vehicles involved in the first collision.
He said the force was still trying to find the other people who left the scene.
The first collision, involved a Kia and a BMW, on the southbound carriageway just before 05:00 BST.
Shortly after, a second crash between a pedestrian and a van was reported by the ambulance service on the M1 northbound.
Appealing for witnesses Sgt Manley, said: "I am particularly interested in speaking to a coach driver who was driving north on the M1 at the time of the incident and may have crucial information to help with our investigation."
He has called for any witnesses to either crash or anyone who has dashcam footage of the collisions to come forward.
