Memorial bricks have been displayed to honour 15 men who lived on the same street and died in World War One.

The replica bricks, attached to homes in King's Road, St Albans, depict the names, regiment and civilian occupation of their former residents

Earlier this year, a single memorial to all the men, was installed on the Hertfordshire street.

Organiser, Judy Sutton, said the bricks compliment the memorial and "allow us to visualise these men more fully".

"We can picture them coming up their front steps and opening their front doors," she said.

"They are now truly part of the bricks and mortar of their homes."

The men who lived on the street, and died in the 1914-1918 conflict, were aged between 16 and 38 and included three from one family.

Ms Sutton, who has lived in the road for 36 years, said the idea came about because it was thought the 60-house street suffered the "highest number of losses of any" in the city.

After fundraising money was left over from the single memorial, designed by artist Renato Niemis, residents decided to put the extra cash towards the cost of individual replica bricks. The plaques were installed during a service on Remembrance Sunday.

Memorial organiser Judy Sutton said she 'passes the memorial most days' and is 'so glad these poor men are now remembered in the street from which they came'

However, Ms Sutton the bricks were "not the final piece of the King's Road story".

She has written a book, with co-author Helen Little, containing details about all the men's pasts and said life was "very different back then".

"I have a wonderful archive of stories and pictures from decades gone by of the lives of the ordinary people of King's Road," she added.
