A successful campaign has led to a Watford street being renamed Yellow Brick Road in honour of Sir Elton John.

Occupation Road, next to Watford FC, has been permanently changed in the nod to The Hornets' life president.

Fan group The 1881 Movement started a campaign for a name-change last year after the 76-year-old's concerts at the Vicarage Road stadium.

Group founder Roy Moore said the road name was a way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sir Elton's presidency.

The singer became president of Watford FC in 1973, the year he released his seventh album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

He became chairman in 1976, the same year he released Don't Go Breaking My Heart which became his first UK number one single.

Mr Moore said he contacted Watford Borough Council and requested the change because "if it wasn't for Elton John, there wouldn't have been multiple springboards to get where we are."

Peter Taylor, mayor of Watford, said he was pleased the road name had been changed.

Speaking about the music icon he said: "It is right that we create a lasting tribute that captures his profound impact on the town."
