Resident Christine Williams worries if the meat dumping continues it will attract rats and foxes.

Residents have described their disgust after large amounts of raw meat have been dumped on their street.

People living near Gayton Close and Liddel Close in Luton, Bedfordshire, said piles of meat have appeared almost daily for the last six weeks.

Christine Williams, who lives nearby, has called on the council to install cameras and issue fines to deter the culprits.

Luton Borough Council said it has been investigating the matter.

In a statement the authority said it was "aware of this criminal act of dumping raw food waste within Liddel Close and Gayton Close".

It added: "We take all criminal activity extremely seriously. Our enforcement team has begun an investigation and where we find evidence we will take action to prosecute the perpetrators.

"To ensure public health, the council's street cleansing team has removed this dumped raw food waste and sanitised the location."

Ms Williams, who volunteers for the area's Tenants and Residents' Association, said she and her neighbours were "fed up" of the regular dumping.

She said: "It's just disgusting, it makes me feel really ill."

She explained the meat first appeared in the area in blue carrier bags about six weeks ago, and since then its appearance has become a daily occurrence.

Residents have contacted the council each time the waste has appeared, and said that the authority has cleared the mess quickly each time.

Ms Williams said she asked the authority to install cameras.

The council say it is investigating and trying to identify the culprits who keep dumping the raw meat

Ms Williams said the meat appeared to be off-cuts, including carcases and chicken legs.

She added: "Why don't [the culprits] take it to a farm and feed it to a pig instead of dumping it?

"Why dump meat when they can get rid of it properly?"

Luton Borough Council said it has been investigating the matter.
