David Hopkins asked Milton Keynes City Council to call an urgent meeting with Bedford Estates, which owns the land.

Both the landowner and Greensands Trust, which manages the land, were approached for comment.

Milton Keynes Council said it had no formal powers over the site but had offered specialist archaeological advice should it be needed.

Mr Hopkins, a Conservative councillor, said he was notified by the local history society of damage caused to the site by mountain bikers.

He also shared concerns that signage with information about the site had been removed from the area.

He said the area was "under attack once again, from mountain bikers in particular, who are causing serious erosion of this important, local feature".

The fort, which is about 800ft long and 450ft wide, was listed as a scheduled monument by Historic England in 1933.

The age of the monument was estimated by the discovery and analysis of pottery found in an excavation of the site.
