The Heart of Slough project will cost a total of £450m

A new library and culture centre as part of a £450m plan to transform Slough has been given the go-ahead.

The project joins the new bus station for the town which is already under construction as part of the Heart of School regeneration programme.

The library building will house a 180-seat performance area, cafe, learning and teaching rooms and meeting areas.

The designs were backed by councillors and construction should start in 2012 and be completed in 2013.

Andrew Stevens, from Slough Borough Council, said: "The new building not only looks great, it will bring a new sense of community into the heart of Slough.

"We will be consulting on the internal designs over the next few weeks and will run a competition to come up with a new name for the building soon after."
