Oldfield Primary School's places to double

Temporary classrooms will be installed at a Berkshire school to accommodate double the number of reception pupils in 2012.

Increased demand for places at Oldfield Primary School in Maidenhead led to councillors approving the permanent expansion of the school.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead said it was also considering creating a new building for the school.

The preferred option is to move the school from Chiltern Road to Bray Road.

'Most popular'

A report will be published in March exploring the available options.

The school's intake will increase from 30 pupils to 60 in September 2012, doubling the size of the school in the next seven years.

Children's services councillor Eileen Quick said: "Oldfield is one of the borough's most popular and Ofsted-rated excellent schools and figures show that demand will keep on rising in the years ahead.

"We have a responsibility to explore ways of offering new and better solutions so that good schools can continue to flourish and cater for larger numbers of pupils.

"Providing temporary classrooms will double the number of the reception intake in 2012 but in the longer term we want to work towards providing a new 60-children-per-year-group school on a local site."
